COUNSELING SERVICES IN kennebunk, MAINE

Scott Kavanagh

Hello and welcome!  I am Scott Kavanagh, a licensed therapist specializing in individual, couples and family therapy, with a focus on life and relationship transitions.  With over thirty years experience as a marriage and family counselor, I look forward to helping you attain the personal growth you are committed to accomplishing. At my practice, Lower Village Counseling, I provide assistance to people ranging from high schoolers, college students and a range of couples and individuals well into their 80’s.

Scheduling an Appointment

When a person calls me looking for an appointment and they ask "Are you accepting new clients?" I ask for some initial information. And if it seems that I might be helpful, if I have an opening, the answer is ‘yes’. Sometimes the response is “not just now” depending in part upon current case load. In those instances, I encourage people to keep looking. I also give an indication when I may have an opening. And if they share a little of what their needs are I can sometimes offer a referral or provide information that might be helpful in the interim.

In Person or Tele-Counseling?

My preference is to see people in person. I offer Tele-Counseling appointments when in person meeting is not possible. I work with people from a variety of states. I have been working with tele-counseling for several years. It is very simple. It may feel unusual at first but most folks adjust very quickly. I use a ZOOM platform.

When do you meet?

I am currently available to meet with clients on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays. I have been engaged in counseling as a vocation for several decades.

How does Insurance work?

If you have insurance, I do the filing on your behalf. I am a provider for a limited group of Insurance Companies. Anthem Blue Cross, Harvard Pilgrim and United Behavioral Health are the primary ones. Co-pays can be paid in cash, check or credit card. If I am not a provider for your insurance coverage, I will send you an invoice at the end of each month for you to submit for out of network reimbursement. I encourage everyone to reach out to their Insurance Provider to see what their coverage is.

You are available…then what?

The first step is to ask you for basic information to assign you the appointment. Then I will send you an email with further instructions to complete these three forms. I will send you information about my location, where to park, where I will greet you and bring you to the office, Suite 302. Once your appointment is scheduled I will send you a reminder on the Sunday prior to our meeting simply as a reminder.

Who is your ideal client?

The ideal client is someone who recognizes they don’t have all the answers and they are interested in other perspectives. They want to understand themselves and perhaps how they can change to be the best they can become. The ideal client may be in crisis, or stuck in a situation where they have little control over or may be interested in reflecting on their life. They may be looking for strategies to address stress, anxiety, depression, conflict and reduce their emotional discomfort. A person who is ready to grow emotionally is willing to be transport, vulnerable and honest. They are willing to try on a new lens in looking at their current life. They are ready to grow and change.

What is your approach?

First and foremost I am concerned about you. My counseling style is relational, listening, asking lots of questions and being honest. In your first session you are one step closer to a new you, where you feel empowered, encouraged, supported and on a positive path to growth and well-being. I am a solution-focused, cognitive behavioral therapist, my goal is to help you uncover your potential and lead a life that is worth celebrating. While you can't change difficult situations of the past or change others, you can change you. We can work together to better understand your present circumstances and hopefully resolve some current challenges. The goal is for you to have a more fulfilling and meaningful life. If you are ready to move in a new direction in your life, I look forward to working with you.
